connection in some of the tunes.
Always been big on the pixels but ever since a special rained out summer holiday in a Cornish gaming nirvava (and run down amusement park next to the beach)
playing an ultra rare Rave Racer cabinet, next to a worn but still working Outrun (Magical Sound Shower!) and of course Virtua Fighter in the mid 90s, and on
my first games console, Yuzo Koshiro's inspiring music in Streets of Rage 1 & 2.
Attack the Barbarian - throwing the small goons at the bosses is so much fun, best part of this game is in 2 player when the end boss offers ONE of you the
chance to join him, making you fight one another, only to still betray the player left standing, well evil.

Bryant siblings always had the best music in the Virtua Fighter games, best of all in the sequel composed by Takayuki Nakamura which I played religiously on

For a long while I always associated electronic music with fighting games 'stage' music, racing games 'track' music, got me into music, and
been getting back into it recently with Ridge Racer 2 and Ace Combat X (all new music late 90s stylee) both series had great music thanks to the Namco Sound
Team. Rave Racer first hinted at a more cohesive style emerging with the drum & bass influenced theme E XH Notes by Sanodg:

However for me its with the well 'ard Rage Racer (my very first playstation game back in late 97, ahh the memories) when Hiroshi Okubo emerges as Sound
Director and things step up another gear, Silver Stream and Lightning Luge are absolute classics for me, if you haven't heard them before, you're in
for a treat.

Glad you like my sig Shaner, wish I could take credit for coming up with it, but all I did was rework the opening quote from, you guessed it, a videogame, and a criminally neglected Playstation 2 one at that called The Mark of Kri. "Gather round all of you who would listen..." narration is like Conan the Barbarian with booksmarts, oh yeah, dig for it in those bargain bins. Anyhow, could mention a bunch of other videogame scores, Tekken 2, the solo synth scores of the Metroid series, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the mighty Guru Ant in Parappa Da Rappa 2, oh and Gitaroo Man with its level 4 drum and bass difficulty spike, but I got things to do, important things like touring with my jazz band while piloting giant mecha and flying in airships in Bumpy Trot aka Steambot Chronicles. I'd better leg it before someone dishes out a cyber atomic wedgie lol.

First up, should note I'm only putting up
links to music on youtube that is out of print, very hard to come by, even in Japan, making it next to impossible for me to find much of what I'm looking
for…but some are still about if you look hard enough. I've only just bought across a used copy of the Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere - been listening to it
today, the future sound of Yokohama indeed. Nice one gjpidgeon, no need to be ashamed of calling it
music, inspite of the technological limitations, it has its own aesthetic you know, its own style, I figure its like a form of primitive music, like folk and

I should add that another composer helped shaped later
Streets of Rage, Motohiro Kawashima, and he took it in some really odd places in the third game, very eccentric out there stuff, IDM influences that you
wouldn't expect to hear in a populist side scrolling beat em up.
Actually regarding buying stuff, I have found a really
comendable set up based in Japan which helps composers reach fans around the world, www.vgmworld.com - very friendly
informative stuff, with discography that reveal that many Namco Sound Team members DJ and produce non videogame beats, must investigate! They even permit
questions be raised to affiliated musicians, including Sampling Masters MEGA and AYA, I'm going to see if I can ask them the Sound Team about influences in
the early mid 90s, including 4hero and Reinforced camp, you never know...
I haven't even mentioned the ultimate videogame score

One of the best messageboard threads I've read in a long time. Really interesting to go back and listen to this music - it's like a forgotten parallel
universe. Some really emotive music and they way these Japanese composers have interpreted the influences from Western music is fascinating. Of all the tunes
listed there, I have to say Rage Racer's Silverstream is my favourite. Just listening to it is making me want to head straight to my nearest second hand
games emporium and go diggin in the crates to find a copy. Wish I'd never sold my PS1, and the steering wheel with it. Strange how memories of a video
game can stir such emotion...

stuff.

there's a lot of tunes still being made on the c64, some really minimalistic techno sounds , pads etc. I even heard a jungle tune about 2 years ago. http://www.worldofspectrum.org/projectay/ (tim follin did a 4 channel tune for agent x , at the time it was amazing.. a lot of noise in it, but it was impressive) http://remix.kwed.org/ I do remember the music in RR also, I played it till I finished it, got very tricky near the end though. cool game though

yeah, those chiptunes are more like what i think of when it comes to videogame music..
apart from hvsc, i can also recommend 8bitpeoples, many people i know are also into overclocked (i'm not too familiar) |

Just incase anyone doesn't know about them, there's loads of emulators for all the consoles available - and you can get the ROMS for pretty much
anything...

Even found a few of my old time faves - Trap Door - based on the old animated series, and Jet Set Willy, both on the C64. |

yeah, i'm heavily playing emulators myself.. much more thatn anything else. snes on my computer and nintendo ds, same for commodore c64 and amiga.

Brilliant, loads to check out there, thanks a lot. Saw Samiyam at Brainfeeder last night (review on brownswood) and he played loads of beats with
8bit/16bit/Arcade sounds in. Sounded wicked.

idleberg, thats a classic I used to play rodland years ago. The conversions of it were top rate also and I knew about them more than
the arcade ones. Much in the vein with 2 player things like bubble bobble, although I saw parasol stars later, I didn't think it was so great as the
previous games in the series. That defender, gaplus , tempest 2000, jungle hunt, A.S.O etc and a few of the lesser known capcom games I used to play. Along
with the obvious shinobi etc. We used to have a chip shop near me that had 5 arcade machines, no one ever eat there, just go and play the machines hehe.

there was a remake of speedball 2 for the pc not long ago. fancy 3d and +%$*. nothing like the original ("icecream, icecream").
stealth: i think rodland is my favourite of that kind of game. it's a pity there are no updated versions of bubble bobble, the c64 version looks terrible. there are at least two follow-ups for arcade machines, you can play them with MAME. they have better looking graphics (16-bit consoles style). oh, and how i miss playing metal slug! |
